Take It Further...January, Day 4

I am using Joan Waldman's book brought out by the American Quilter's Society, Quilt Savvy Embroidery Stitches, to inspire my seam treatments. These are very traditional and based on lots of research into old crazy quilts. It just seemed like a good fit for this project, something formal.

It is sloooowwww going for me, though. I find myself using single strand floss for some of the seam elements, ME, the queen of the fast and chunky!

So far I like the look a lot, but I am going to have to address the fact that the border is going to overwhelm the letter....if I don't embellish the letter too. I kind of planned on doing that, but now I know I have to.

There is a seam treatment on here that Pam Kellogg graciously charted out for us, too. Thanks, Pam!....

A close up shot. I want my stitching to show up, but not be too contrasty either.

Sharon picked out a really nice palette for us.
I am not staying slavishly with it, however, but using it as a jumping off point. There have to be a few sparks flying, after all. For me that has meant veering into the reddish side of purple.

Oh....and thanks for all the pizaa suggestions, too! ;-)

This was worth waiting all morning for - very nice. I find I have sparks flying too with what I had in mind - but I think that is the challenge, and the colors a "point of departure." I will be anxious to see the flowers embellished - that is fascinating to me.

I just love these colors. They are Mother Nature's best, greens with violets, like a spring garden. If I ever finish my New York Beauty (I will, I will!), it has the same palette. I added a little fuschia pink, just like you did. The pink really makes it pop.

Allison, I'm thrilled that you used my little seam treatment on your quilt! It looks lovely as does everything you've done so far.

I really like how you used the palette as a jumping off point. I tore my hair out at first trying to stick as close to the palette as I could but I'm quite pleased with how my block is turning out.

And speaking of which, it's time to stitch!

Maybe because the colors you chose are the ones I really like - a bit brighter than the palette Sharon showed - I really, really like this! I was looking at an antique book of stitches last night - so old that the stitches don't even have the same names we use - and thinking how lovely some of them were and that I might have to use some of them on Moms blocks.

As always, this is looking beautiful. Is it going to have beads, or the stitching only?

Beautiful work! Is the letter silk ribbon embroidery? I wish I could see it "for real."
Happy New Year from another part of WA!
