Alliance CQ...Finished

My quilt for the Crazy for Quilts contest benefiting the Alliance for American Quilts is now completed. It won't be eligible for competition as I have recently joined their board of directors...but I am most happy to be contributing to the fundraising aspect of this contest, as my quilt will be auctioned off on eBay with the rest of the entries next fall.

I named it "Ode to Tamar", after the quilt that inspired it. For this occasion I wanted to tip my hat to my Victorian fore bearers in crazy quilting.

This is a mourning quilt made by Tamar Horton Harris North in 1877 in memory of her daughter. You can read more about it here.
I absolutely adore everything about this quilt. If I had been able to find fabric that matched the border (and whose scale fit with the 16" X 16" size I was required to work within) I would have tried to replicate it, using four blocks in the center.

But I couldn't find the fabric, so my quilt ended up just alluding to Tamar's, with my black and white elements and the border with four corners of flowers.

I like to think that I used a judicious amount of trim in this quilt....between the fan blades, the blocks, the borders, and as the binding. This saved me some time and hopefully served to integrate everything.

Embellishing over the Broderie Perse in the center was a blast and I look forward to doing more of that!

Here is the back of the quilt.

Given how easy it is now to print up quilt labels on the computer, I decided to include Tamar's quilt and even the website link to information about it. Why not? We should add to the documentation of our work in whatever way we can, is my opinion.

Please do consider making your own 16" X 16" crazy quilt (whether old fashioned or avant-garde) for this worthy organization!

  2. This is gorgeous! I'm in love with embroidery and crazy quilting but have done nothing but a little doll size crazy quilt to play and some postcards. This might be a perfect size for me to play with.

Thanks for the link to Tamar's quilt in memory of her daughter. So much beauty from sadness...

  5. That is really an interesting quilt, Allie. Thanks for the link to the information. Have you seen it in person? It would really be nice to study the details up close as it's beautiful stitching and a very touching subject.
Your quilt is also stunning, and I wish I could also see it up close, especially that lovely center. Oh, and congrats on the board position!

  6. I will have to study Tamar's quilt more because I love the way she has done the floral motifs. I have been thinking lately that would be a good way to showcase some of my favorite embroidered flowers. thanks for that link.

  7. What a great idea to put her quilt on the label on the back. This is a great tribute. I know you'll raise lots of money.

  8. Ahhh. The composition of this quilt is *DeLIghTfUl*%!

The "mini" squares around the edges -- the one flower in each corner with the black/white -- the fact that the thread used to stitch the black piecing isn't black but still gives the "appearance" of black, the way the center pops out at you but is grounded and "not to be outdone" by the border. And what is that green trim that goes all the way around the edge?
The only thing I really don't like about this post is that I want more close up pictures -- I want to see the center close-up!

    A 16x16 quilt sounds do-able...when's it due?

Thanks for the dose of delight today!

  12. Really amazing Allie! I'll keep an eye out for that fabric, or maybe lace that could be laid on a black background that could replicate that pattern.

You might even be able to reproduce it with thread play if you wanted the challenge. I could probably talk you through it! My sister likes to tell people I taught her threadplay over the phone in a 5 minute phone call!

  14. It's lovely. I like the way the clear, pure colors are set off by the black and white. Also like the way your center bouquet spills out of its frame just a bit.

  17. Oh, it's just wonderful! I'm sure that she heard her name mentioned in Heaven and is looking down and smiling! I'll bet she would be very pleased to think that after all these years she has inspired two quilts! And I'm sure her mother is probably pleased too.

  18. Oops! Just reread where it's the mothers name that is Tamar. Still, it's all in the piece it's self. Lovely work...
