Vintage CQ...Flower #9

Lots has been happening around here, so I haven't gotten much stitching done since returning home from Michigan.

We've had a full blown "broccoli emergency" where a huge bed has all come ripe at once, so there has been much harvesting, slicing, blanching, etc.

It's been a good year, for sure.

The tomatoes are looming, too, and will soon demand our attention....

This Tiffin weighed in at 20.5 oz.

But even so, I found some time for Floral Block #9.

This is a spiderweb rose done up with 1" Hanna Silk ribbon. The rather misshapen leaves are needleturned hand-dyed silk dupioni, with some couched Noro yarn. (It's from Japan) Ultrasuede forms the calyxes.

There is so much incredibly great floral work being done all around the blogs this summer. The work of Patricia Eaton, of Bird Nest on the Ground, is particularly inspiring. Patricia, can I borrow some of your French knots for #10?

  1. I have been harvesting broccoli but they aren't as big as yours!! WOW!
Broccoli is one of my favorite foods, too. We have been eating plenty of tomatoes, the eggplants are looking good, too. Where were you in Michigan? Maybe you were near me.

  2. That Hanna silk makes a BEAUTIFUL rose! And you should be just as proud of your harvest. What I wouldn't give for a slice of that tomato...

  4. The rose is beautiful! Really wonderful texture. And the size of the broccoli!!!!....Robert has this whole production gardening down to an art form. I still have a jar of pear chutney that I borrowed for the display and somehow was separated from it's peers...it is waiting to be delivered to you soon...I was hoping to get the other jars back to you myself....but life completely imploded and then exploded as it has a way of doing :) :( Hope the rest of the jars made it home safe and sound. Good luck with the incoming bounty!!!

  7. Congratulations on the monster veggies. You guys are all green thumbs. My garden is in its infancy since we have so little sun and hot weather: everything matures very late in the season. I have gardening envy.

Another great block for your project. I love spiderweb roses: they make up so fast and look so lovely. I posted a leaf photo ( and a few flowers) for you on my blog.

  9. What a gorgeous rose! I've only used the 4mm or 7mm kind. I'll be watching for fat French Knots! Mine always fall out. You need to do a tomato quilt!! That is some tomato you grew.

  10. I have never seen such a gorgeous, flamboyant, spider web rose. This is spectacular, good company for your humongous broccoli and tomato! And the rose leaves just look as though they've had too much sun.

  11. Oh my, what a gorgeous rose! I can't wait to see these flowers together. :-) Yes, I know this is a long-term thing, but I'll be here! :-) Your veggies look scrumptious, too. WOW. Hugs, Cathy

  13. Allie - roast the poblanos over the BBQ - R and I talked about making an outdoor roaster of half a 55-gallon drum, cut on the vertical - and freeze with the skins on. When you defrost, the skins will slip off and will have flavored the chile meat with a smoky undertone> Great for rellenos, or casserole, or...
ohhh, that Tiffin - green with lust!
